Design is Not Easy

Design is not easy. Stores and websites go to great length to convince us that if we buy their products we will be ahead of the trend. In some cases this might be true but there is also a chance things can backfire. It doesn’t matter how cute an outfit is on a store’s mannequin, if it doesn’t fit your body type it won’t work. This rule can also be carried over to home and office design. If our tables or desk is too big for the space it will not matter how fashion forward the look is. Additionally, if our chairs our designed only for comfort, they could ruin a whole rooms décor. Below you will see some simple tips for ensuring you spend your money on the right style.
Space is Everything
When it comes to home or office décor the most important factor to look at is square footage and layout. It doesn’t matter how nice of a desk you have, if it doesn’t fit the space it will be an eye sore. So how do we know if you are getting the right product for the space you have? Just like you learned in shop class, it is important to measure twice. Before you really go shopping you need to know how much space is available. If we want to set up a traditional style home office with a formal desk and credenza will there be enough space for guests or accessories? Will there be enough space between furniture pieces to ensure we have adequate mobility? This is where breaking out the painter’s tape can become a real asset. Start with the blank room and use the tape to layout what you are planning. This will provide an accurate visual image of how much space will actually be left after the major furniture components are installed. Furthermore this allows you to see if you gain any bonus space for additional accessories. Finally, if your original plan doesn’t work do not be discouraged. If a desk and credenza doesn’t fit properly an L-shaped desk put in the room’s corner can solve your problems. You can have a corner workspace and maybe even fit in a couch for guest seating. There is a solution for every space challenge.
Color Do’s and Don’ts
Everything in a room should always match; however if everything is the same color the same room can look boring and uninteresting. So how do you balance matching colors and flare? There is no simple answer to this question. A simple place to start is to decide on a wall color and to match it with the furniture you want to use for the room. Traditional furniture typically goes well with more neutral color schemes and more modern furniture tends to match more bold color choices a bit better; although, there are exceptions. It doesn’t matter if you pick the furniture color or the wall color first, what matters is you have a sample of one when you pick out the other. Certain furniture finishes require bright walls to ensure the room looks welcoming, while others need darker walls to make sure the furniture pops. Having two bright focal colors, one on the wall and one on the furniture, can often clash or create a feeling of conflict in a space. If you are unsure if things look right do not be scared to ask. Most companies are happy to offer advice.
Be Different
So once you have the color basics established it is time to think about adding something a bit different. This can be some wall art that pops or even a focal wall painted a different color. You can use additional pieces of furniture or even paint molding to add some depth to the space. If you have a hobby you can even consider a theme to the room. For example, if you have a green thumb, do not be afraid to bring some plants into your space. If you are a sports fan, maybe some memorabilia will set the tone of your room. What matters most is having an idea of what types of things you want in your space. Finally, and most importantly, do not be afraid to get some help. There are design studios everywhere. Many of them will offer free design service with the purchase of furniture. Do not be afraid to take advantage of these offers. So spend a weekend looking and talking to the designers at a number of places. Take the information from the people you like and consider taking them up on their free design service with purchase offer. Just make sure the company or store has some styles you like before you commit to using them.
Be Yourself
Everyone will always have their own opinions, but it is important to remember what you want matters. When designing a house, office, or any space think about what will make you comfortable. Do not let modern trends sway your decision too much. If you like older traditional styles, go for one. The design industry is always changing and eventually certain styles fall out of favor and are replace. Some older looks sometimes make a comeback as well. What matters most is having a quality coordinated look. If you design a space, everything matches and you do it well the latest trend does not matter. Quality always withstands the test of time.
