United We Stand

United We Stand

Everywhere we look something is trying to separate us.  Unfortunately, we have recently developed into a society where it is easier to discuss our differences then it is to discuss our common views.  Politics, religion, sexual orientation, abortion rights, and how we contain the COVID pandemic are just a few examples of issues that everyone will never agree on.  No matter the origins of our disagreements, we must remember one important fact.  We are stronger together.

United We Stand

There are people out there that believe they can do everything themselves and that they do not need the help of others to get the job done.  History proves that they are ultimately wrong.  No society has ever survived without allies and, in the past, when the world did fall into war it took millions of people and dozens of countries and continents to end it.  America did not win World War II, the Allied powers did.  To go one step further, Texas and California didn’t defeat Japan in the 40’s, the United States did.  During dark times in our history, we have always found a way to put the past behind us and move forward together as a country.  The United States of America has evolved over its 200+ year history. We stepped up the challenge of change during the Women’s Right Movement, during the Civil Rights Movement, and now we must continue to come together to combat racism and prejudice in our society. We must remember that no one group of people is more important than any other and we must stand together against hate.

Find Common Ground

Politicians and some media outlets would have us believe that there are only two choices to an issue.  We get so bottled down by what is considered liberal and conservative issues that we often do not think about compromise anymore.  The way our government was set up was to force compromise.  We have separation of powers, two chambers of congress, and multiple barriers to cross to create new laws.  This was done to force compromise and negotiations.  For a law, rule, or regulation to be formally created it must get the approval of more than half the representatives of the people.  In order for this to occur, common ground in issues must be found.  When a law comes to fruition, often no one is completely happy about it, but everyone gets something they wanted.  The debate process and the governing system we live under was created to ensure that no one person or group has too much power.  We have a system of government where the majority of the people get to decide what happens.  If you disagree with the majority all you have to do is convince enough people and change can occur.

It is important to find common ground in our daily interactions as well as the national spotlight.  At any given time, you are likely to disagree with a family member, friend, or coworker on countless different issues.  IT is important to remember that this is okay.  However, it is of the upmost importance top be respectful of the views of others.  Do not insult them or belittle them based on an opinion.  Instead try having a respectful and decent conversation about it.  Figure out why they believe different then you.  Who knows you could even have your opinion changed?  Do not assume you are always right and listen to others.  Only by taking this approach will we move forward together as a society.

Simple Issues

If there is one thing every major politician will agree on is that there or no simple issues.  Someone or a group is always going to be unhappy and not get what they want.  The question becomes how do you simply complex disagreements?  The answer is you do not.  Complex issues and situations involved complex solutions.  These issues must be debated in great length so we can figure out the root cause to the disagreement.  Sometimes we can find compromised and other times not.  Abortion is the perfect example of a complex issue.   There is no real compromise that will appease all the parties involved.  All we can do as a society is do what we feel is the best approach to governing such a problem. Government is not perfect, and it is foolish to think that a government can solve all our problems.  Its purpose to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and that everyone has opportunities.  We have seen throughout history what happens when people lose faith in governing bodies.  We cannot allow our society to fall in chaos by making that mistake.  So, try to have faith in the system and if there is an issue you believe strongly in get involved.  Try to make a difference by changing minds and working the process the proper way.  Hard work and determination pay off and that is how we will solve complex issues.

It does not matter what your political belief is or what God you pray to.  What matters is your behavior within society.  Remember to be respectful and open minded.  Remember to take action to facilitate change and do not simply wait for it to happen. Finally, remember that we are and will always be one country and one people and we are stronger together.
