Time to Reboot

Time to Reboot

The holidays are called the most magical time of the year; however, it feels great for them to finally be over.   Gift shopping, family events, religious services are an important part of our culture and who we are but they require a lot of effort and work.  We spread joy and celebrate a number of different things in December and as a result our daily routine gets thrown into disarray.  Now that we have entered January we can once again settle into our existing routine or adapt a new one.  Our lives in general should start to calm down, at least for a little while.

Work

The short work weeks have ended and it is time to once again focus on our careers.  We all have responsibilities at work and midweek holidays, family vacations, and other obstacles can slow down progress during the holiday season.  Some companies get so busy they do not have time to reflect and fix long term problems until things slow down.  Other companies take holiday breaks and work with smaller staffs during December.  It doesn’t matter what end of the spectrum your company sits on, what matters is January is a great time to reset.  We will no longer have the highs and lows of the holiday season and everyone should be back at work.  We have time to meet with our coworkers and come up with solutions to put us on the path to success.  Additionally, 2019 has ended and it is important for us to finish our year end fiscal responsibilities.  This can be ensuring all bills are paid and all expenses are accounted for.  We must prepare for tax season and make sure we are in a solid financial positions to start the New Year.

Family

We love our families and it is great to spend time with them during the holiday season; however, too much family can create countless a number of issues.  Old arguments will eventually come to the service or different philosophies will eventually create some drama.   We all enjoy reconnecting and seeing everyone but it feels nice to have an empty house at last.  Hosting family members and family functions in general is a lot of work.  They have to be planned, food arrangements have to be made, and scheduling is key.  Odds are we have multiple engagements with different sets of relatives creating a busy few weeks.  This becomes exhausting, we get so busy that it becomes hard to remember where we are going next, it seems there is no end in sight.  However, we have reached the end and we can finally return to normalcy.  Gone are the weeks of multiple engagements and we can finally plan a weekend of true relaxation.  We can make time for our smaller family and focus on ourselves.  January marks the time when we can go back to being ourselves and not worry about offending our families by missing an event.  Just remember to enjoy the quiet family time when you can.  Odds are a birthday or another event is only a few weeks or months away.

Food

If there is one thing we all do in excess during the holiday season it is eat.  We have large celebratory meals and these general not as healthy as we would like. We typically go to many family meals and we enjoy the vast spread of food.  Now that the season has ended it is time to return to our normal eating habits or to create some new better habits.  January sees us making a number of New Year’s resolutions and a popular one is to be healthier or to lose some weight.  It is time for us to leave the feasts behind us and come up with a new plan.  There are a number of different ways to succeed in doing this.  For some of us cutting out snacks and junk food will make a huge difference.  For others counting calories is the key to a healthier diet and lifestyle.  Finally, some of us will create elaborate meal plans to adhere to too ensure we meet our goals.  The approach we take should cater to our individual needs and desires. Everyone is different, we have different metabolisms, we have different body types, and we have different dietary needs.  The first step to improving out eating habits is realizing this.  This revelation will allow us to make adjustments that work for us and our individual situation.  Additionally, we must remember we do not have to do this alone.  There are countless resources out there to help us become healthier.  So when we are unsure of where to start look for these resources.  They can be magazines, online websites, or programs.  Decide what is best for you and make the decision to start your healthier eating.

Shopping

At this point most of us have had enough shopping.  We stressed and worked hard to ensure we gave everyone the perfect gift.   We fought through busy malls and waited in long lines at stores.  Additionally we spent a decent amount of money.  January marks an end to all of this.  The malls and stores are now much quieter and we are no longer worried about checking everyone off our lists.  We no longer have to spend our free time shopping for others.  That being said, a little January shopping for ourselves is not a bad thing.  Now that the holidays are over stores start to liquidate excess merchandise.  In other words it is clearance sale season.   So make sure to take an hour or so at your favorite store to deal hunt.  This shopping should be less stressful because we no longer need to buy things.  We should be deal hunting and only make purchases that we feel good about if we purchase anything at all.  So take an afternoon or evening and stop into the mall, if you don’t find anything you really don’t lose much, just a few minutes, but you can find the deal of a lifetime.

January marks the start of a New Year and an end to the holiday craziness.  It is good to put the craziness of December behind us and to start the year off with some normalcy.  Happy New Year and enjoy the quieter month.
