Super Bowl Do's and Don'ts

Super Bowl Do's and Don'ts

The biggest week in sports is upon us and with it comes infinite possibilities for fun.  The Super Bowl has become more than just a football game, it has become a national event.    There are tons of activities, in depth special reports, and games that can be played based on the game.  So how do you know what to do?  With anything in life there are some simple dos and don’ts that center on Super Bowl week.

Do’s

Super Bowl squares is a fun game that can be played in the office and with friends and family.   The rules are simple.  You have a row and a column of numbers ranging 0-9, these numbers represent the last number in the score of the game.  For example if you select square 2/4 you would win if the final score it 22 to 24.  Additionally you would win if the score was 32 to 14.   What matters is the last number.  This game can be played a number of different ways as well.  You can have on winner based on the final score of the game or you could have 4 winners based on the score at the end of each quarter.  Many people play this game for money as well.  You buy a square for a certain amount of cash and the prizes are given out based on the rules the owner decided.  This adds a little incentive to play but is not required.  It doesn’t matter how you set up the game, what matters is it adds a little more incentive and provided more fun when watching.

Who doesn’t like going to a fun party?  It is a good setting to talk to friends, relax and enjoy ourselves, and to have a good time.  We live and work to have fun and it is important to remember this when worrying about our responsibilities.  One of the busiest party weekends during the year is Super Bowl Sunday.  People will rent out party centers, host viewing parties, and even arrange for pot luck style events.  As a society we make and eat lots of finger foods and consume a lot of drinks.  It is a major event for restaurants, grocery stores, catering companies, and party centers.  It really is the first major national party event since New Year’s Eve. We have all had a long few weeks of work and winter and the Super Bowl provides a great excuse to let loose.  So make sure we are assessing our options and make some plans to have fun on game day.

Just like any other major event that inspires major social events, the right football finger food is crucial.  We all want to bring a dish that everyone will love.  Cooking and baking gives us the chance to experiment and express ourselves through food.  We get to share the types of foods we like with others and we even get the chance to try new things.  It also provides us with a great excuse to leave our culinary comfort zone.  Social media is full of recipes and food suggestions this time of year.  We don’t have to look far.  Every culinary company is promoting recipes that focus on their product as a main ingredient.  Spend a few minutes and look through them and even attempt one.  By experimenting with food we can find new favorites.  Additionally, don’t be scared to try dishes other people bring to the office and parties.  You will likely find some that are to die for.

Don’ts

Everything can be good in moderation and bad in excess.  Super Bowl week tempts us to over drink and over eat.  It is easy to get lost in the moment and not even realize how much we have consumed.  So how do we resist temptation?  First, and most importantly we need to have a plan.  If we are watching our weight be aware of what we are eating.  Count calories and ask people about ingredients.  In that circumstance it is important to understand what we are eating.  Second, do not be afraid to ask for support or help.  Our friends and family support us in all of our endeavors and they will support us making good decisions.  It is okay to rely on them and ask them for help.  Ask your spouse to remind you of your goals and to help keep you centered.  This was you do not eat or drink too much.  Finally, it is important to know how much we have drank.  We sometimes get carried away at parties and we must realize when we have had too much.  Drinking and driving is not only illegal, it is reckless and dangerous.  Do not allow yourself or your friends to make this potentially fatal mistake.

It is way too easy to spend too much money Super Bowl week.  We all want to get the newest team apparel to show support for our team and we even want to have the latest and greatest technologies.  Did you know that the best time of the year to buy a television is the week after the Super Bowl?  Electronic dealers and manufactures wait to mark down older models until after the big event.  The reason why is simple, people want to watch the Super Bowl on the best televisions possible.  People who host parties want an excuse to buy a new TV and the big game is a great one.  Additionally, be careful at the grocery store as well.  These business want to make money just like any other company and will likely feature high margin items on displays and endcaps.  Do not buy the first thing you see.  Spend some time in the store and look for the best option or the best deal.  Many times you can find a better product for less money.

Super Bowl Sunday is a great day.  It is a Sunday full of media coverage, fun gatherings, and the biggest football game of the year.  Take a moment to live in the moment and enjoy the big day.  Just remember, be safe, make good choices, and have fun.
