Holidays on the Horizon

Holidays on the Horizon

We have been spoiled by a great summer and a beautiful fall, but we must not let our guard down because now that it is November we must come to accept that Winter is on the horizon.  Daylight savings time has come to an end, trees are shedding their summer leaves, and it is dark at the end of dinner time.  However, with November comes too wonderful things.  The thought that the holiday season is on the horizon and, thankfully, an end to the constant political advertisements.

Peace at Last

Politics can be extremely divisive and for this reason we will avoid the topic, but we can all agree that it is nice to see commercials that try to sell us products and services instead of positions and people.  Political ads are a part of our culture, it’s one of those things that just became normal over time, and they serve a purpose.  However, the last few weeks before an election they are constant and can drive all of us crazy.  It doesn’t matter what your belief or position is, it is just nice to not hear someone else’s position every time we want to watch a television show or stream on our mobile devices.  We can finally get back to our normal media consumption patterns without the constant background noise.

Holiday Time is on the Horizon

When we talk about the holiday season, we often jump right to thinking about having to buy gifts and how to find the best deals.  It is too early to worry about this in early to mid-November.  We should be focused on enjoying the remaining fall season and whatever harvest festivals and seasonal foods are available.  Thanksgiving is the next major holiday, and we should be focused on family and food for the time being.  Thanksgiving is a celebration of our national heritage and our history, it is a celebration of our family and loved ones, and it is a time to reflect on the past and the future.  We need to make it enjoyable and not stressful.  It does not matter if the meal is perfect.  It does not matter if you serve traditional turkey or a family favorite in its place.  What matters is we spend time with each other, and we think about the joy in our lives.  We should be thankful for what we have instead of worrying about what we don’t. This is the time to think about how to make Thanksgiving special and how to make it enjoyable and not about the work it involves.

Shopping Starts Earlier Every Year

Once we get our priorities in order and realize that Thanksgiving is a time for happiness and not stress, we can think a bit about shopping.  No, we do not have to run to the stores right away and start our holiday shopping, but the retail industry would like us too.  Stores, both brick and motor and online, have already begun to push their holiday message and set up for the holiday shopping season.  It would not hurt to take an early look.  Now is the best time to do some light browsing and see what is out there.  Many people enjoy shopping and find it relaxing if there is no time crunch.  Now is the time to get out and enjoy walking through a mall, browsing stores and even the internet.  You might find something you have to have, you might find a great deal, or you might just enjoy looking before things get too crazy.  The best part about a shopping trip in early November is it can be stress free and enjoyable.  If you are someone who loves to shop, make the most of it now before it gets too crazy.

Responsibilities

When we were young all, we wanted to do was grow up, little did we know that adulting is difficult.  Now is the best time to set us up for success throughout the holiday season.  We should be planning our days off, making travel arrangements, and solidifying our holiday plans now.  It is a pain to do and can be frustrating to get everyone on the same page but in the end if we have a solid plan odds are we have less to stress about and more time to enjoy the moments.  We do not have to get everything done right away, but if we start now, we can make the last two months of the year far more enjoyable.

There is a negative stigma that can develop when people start talking about the holiday season and there does not have to be.  Some people love this time of year, and some people are complete grinches about it.  It does not matter if you love the season or hate it.  What matters is we make proper plans to make the best of it.  Do not wait to the last minute, do not worry about all the things you have to do, just make plans and roll with the punches.  Finally, remember to have a great Thanksgiving and to focus on what is important to you and your family, and everything will be alright.
