Earn Advancement - Don't Expect It

Earn Advancement - Don't Expect It

We live in an era where many people feel entitled to privilege and advancement; however, we also live in a world where you must earn what you have.  Many people feel they are under employed or under valued at work but they do little to change things.  Advancement and success is earned and is not necessarily measured in money.  Below you will read some simple tips to help make advancements in your career and some tips on how to become a better person.

Nothing is Given but Everything is Earned

Having a college degree is a great addition to any resume and can show that you are an intelligent person; however, it does not guarantee you a great job or an upper management position.  College is about learning the skills and acquiring the knowledge necessary to be successful in your professional career but there are many other ways to achieve career success.  There are many famous people who dropped out of college and pursued other ventures that have made them very successful.  So we must ask how did they do it.  There is no right answer to this question but one thing is consistent; they believed in themselves, what they were doing, and they worked hard to get there.  Bill Gates is a great example of making your own success.  He had an idea and surrounded himself with the right people and worked hard to make a product he believed in and that led to success.  No one gave him anything, but he earned a lot.  He worked hard, had a goal in mind, and earned a great deal of money and success through hard work.

Leadership Comes Before the Promotion

Being a leader, in any profession, can be achieved through a number of means; however, one thing remains the same in almost all professional fields.  You must earn respect and show leadership before you receive the title and high pay.  This can be annoying for a lot of people, especially for a person who spent years in school studying to be the best in whatever field they have chosen.  When you enter the work force, it no longer matters if you were top of your collegiate class, you must start at the bottom in almost any company.  To move up the corporate ladder, you must put in time at the bottom and prove yourself.  You might not make as much money as you feel you are worth and you might have to work longer hours than you feel is fair.  However, that is how the real world works.  No upper executive at any company is going to give you a leadership opportunity based on your education, some might give you a chance based on prior work experience, but it would be ill advised to do so without condition.  To become a true leader, you must first earn the respect of your coworkers and employees and show them that you are worthy of leading them.  No one wants to follow someone they don’t respect; would you?  So in order to get that supervisor or leadership role you must prove that you deserve it first.

No One is too Good to Do Any Job

Would you be willing to empty a trash can if no one else around you is willing to do it?  For most people the answer is no.  In any office or professional setting, unpleasant things must be done.  If you work for a smaller company you might not have the luxury of a maintenance staff or cleaning crew; however, the trash still must be taken out and the office still must be cleaned.  The best way to get this done is to take turns doing so.  A true leader is the person who is willing to take the first step.  It is easy to ask others to clean up after themselves and to take out the trash if you do it first.  Whenever you start a new job, if there is no minuteness staff step up to the plate early.  Show you are willing to do the unpleasant job before asking others to do so.   Set a standard and make sure to hold yourself to that standard.  Your coworkers and employees should respect that and should respond to you in a more positive way because you are not asking them to do anything you would not do yourself, and you have already proved it.

Money and Raises are Earned

The topic of compensation is a complicated issue.  Most people feel they work harder than their pay rate reflects and a lot of people would be correct in making that claim.  There are a few ways to approach this; get a new job, earn a promotion, or meet with a supervisor to inquire how to move forward on a career path.  These are just a few ways of approaching this; however, the best way to get a better job, a promotion, or a raise is to prove you are worth the extra money first.  Having the attitude that you are worth more money without doing more work or earning it is an assumption that can cause your career to halt.  In the modern-day work environment, hard work comes before the benefit of higher pay.  No company is going to give you more money without a reason.  So, the best way to get a pay increase is to show you deserve it.  Make a difference at the office and make a difference in the work place culture.  Companies will give opportunities to people who earn them and show they are worth the risk.  Get results and your pay should increase, eventually, as a result.  Do not rush this process, it takes more than a week or a few months.  Work hard, make yourself an asset, and force the company to pay you more based on your actions and results not your potential.

The modern business world is a difficult one to succeed in.  You must be hard working and willing to earn less to make more in the long run.  You can make a name for yourself at almost any company.  Be positive, don’t expect respect but earn it, and work harder than the people around you.  If you do these things with the proper attitude and demeanor, success will eventually come.
