    Different Looks, Same Purpose

    Different Looks, Same Purpose

Home offices, private offices, small work stations, and cubicles are a reflection of those who work in them.   For that reason, there are countless styles and themes to these settings.  It really doesn’t matter what décor choices you make or how big and expensive these places are either.  We set up our work areas to make us comfortable, to ensure we can focus on a task at hand and remain productive throughout the day.

    High Tech vs Old Fashion

Some people prefer modern high tech environments while others prefer classic traditional work spaces.  Neither approach is wrong but they are different.  Some writers still prefer to write by hand and others only use computers now.  Both work approaches lead to books, articles, and news stories so why should we care how the final version gets made.  There is a reason people still buy and use typewriters.  They may not be the most productive or efficient tool to get the job done but for some their simplicity allows them to focus on other things.  The same rule can be said for engineers and other professions where math is crucial.  A computer program can do all the complex equations but often times we still chose to validate the math by hand.  Doing so gives piece of mind that it is done properly.  It is not for us to judge someone’s work habits.  Most people have weird tendencies and, for some, these habits are necessary.  It is important to embrace them.  Technology is designed to help make our lives easier, but for some using it for everything takes the feel out of a job.  We all must find the balance between technology and old fashion methods that work for us.  There is no rule, as long as you get the job done in a timely manner.  Why should it matter how much is done via computers and how much is done by hand?

    Privacy vs Community

Many executives dream of large office spaces filled with high end wood veneer furniture, large conference rooms, and stylish reception areas.  Other major companies prefer wide open work spaces to encourage collaborative work environments.  These are two very different approaches and neither of them is wrong but they do serve different purposes.  We must look at the point of these offices to judge them.  A great example is a law office.  In this setting, you traditionally want privacy.  Clients’ need to feel like their business remains confidential so private offices and conference rooms are necessary.  In contrast a food service office benefits from everyone knowing what is going on.  Having large communal work area allows these people to share information without having to get up every time.  It saves time and energy allowing employees to focus on other issues.  These facts only illustrate the importance setting up the right workspace for the right purpose.  So, remember when it comes time to set up a new office or work area think function first.  It needs to be designed for purpose.  Style is important but it is ultimately a secondary concern.

    Traditional vs Modern

We have discussed in past postings the difference between Traditional and Modern décor styles.  We always come to the same conclusion, style and design is a preference.  Technology can be integrated into any décor style now so you do not need to have a modern looking office to have the latest cutting edge technology.  To contrast an earlier point, law offices can be furnished in a very modern style and still offer plenty of private spaces.  A particular look and color scheme does not affect an offices function or purpose.  It only serves to make us comfortable.  Do not be afraid to do something that looks different.  It is okay to be unique and cutting edge and it is also okay to want a classic traditional look.  Mahogany still remains one of the most popular color choices for furniture.  Grey, white, and other stylish light colors are the current trend but that could change in 5, 10, or even 20 years.  We do not know what will be considered trendy in the future.  This is why we should make design choices based on what we like and not be bothered by whether or not it is the current style.   If we do a good job it will withstand the test of time.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to designing a small work area or an entire office.  There is only whether it is functional or not.  Aesthetics can be changed and everyone will have their own design opinion.  In conclusion, when designing a work space remember to consider function and whether or not it is a comfortable space.  Doing so will ensure it lives up to its purpose.  Finally, we can always change the appearance of an area through accessories.  No look is permanent.
