Natural Disasters

Natural Disasters

We all hear about natural disasters happening around the world and most of us are fortunate to not be directly impacted by them.  Last week alone we have seen extreme heat waves, earth quakes, and countless other events that we cannot control.  Although most of us will live our lives with great fortune and never be affected by a natural disaster it is important to realize they exist and for us to know what to do when they occur.

Heat Wave

One of the most common natural event that everyone will experience is heat waves.  This is an extended period of time where the average temperature is greater than normal and they are usually accompanied by lack of rain fall.  The most dangerous thing that happens during heat waves is dehydration.  When the temperature is oddly warm we sweat more often and most of us might not even realize it is happening.  The best way to combat this is to drink plenty of water.  It is important to note that other beverages will not do the trick.    Caffeinated drinks can actually be harmful during these heat waves, these drinks often dehydrate you instead of replenishing your body’s water supply.  It is still okay to enjoy a coffee or soft drink during a heat wave but it is essential that we offset the negative effects by drinking more water.  If you are not sure if you have consumed enough water for the day simply drink extra.  Our bodies and organs rely on water and it is extremely difficult to drink too much of it.  So when in doubt grab an extra glass or water bottle and drink up.

Thunderstorms

All of us have experienced crazy storms that are really scary.  The wind blows and water seems to come pouring down from the sky.  In addition, we are greeted by flashes of lightening and the roar of thunder to warm us that bad weather is upon us.  The best way to stay safe during one of these storms is to seek immediate cover.  Being inside a home is ideal but if the storm comes out of nowhere any shelter will do.  A public building, a mall, or even a covered garage is far better than being out in the open.  In addition, vehicles are equally as safe.  However, it is important to use sound judgement.  If we are traveling and we hit a bad storm it is okay to slow down or pull over to the side of the road.  Sometimes it is best to wait out the worst of the weather and staying still is usually a safe bet.  What is most important it if you do get caught outside stay away from metal surfaces.  Metal attracts lightning and getting electrocuted is certainly not a good time. So remember when in doubt seek cover and wait out the storm, it will eventually pass.

Earthquakes

It is true that earthquakes are more common in certain areas of the world then others, however, they can occur anywhere.  A lot of the time there are small earthquakes and people never notice.  When a larger earthquake does occur it is important to remember safety first.  If you are inside and the building starts to shake seek cover.  Hide under a desk or inside a door frame.  If neither option is available for you look for a reinforced area to seek shelter in.  Be aware of your surroundings and be aware of potential falling objects.  Earthquakes can be strong enough to shake loose screws and bolts, so never assume something is secure.  In addition, if you are driving pull over.  It is okay to stop moving and limit your exposure to risk.  Finally, remember that an earthquake might just be the start.  These natural events are often followed up by smaller quakes known as aftershocks.  So be prepared for them to come.

Extreme Cold

A lot of us think extreme cold weather is just part of winter.  It is tough to even think about cold temperature in the United States in July but they will eventually come.  Freezing temperatures can be extremely dangerous and deadly and we must be ready for them.  Too much exposure to subzero temperatures can cause frostbite and can be damaging to our cars and homes.  We must remember that when winter arrives that we are prepared.  This means having some extra blankets handy and remembering to wear our hats and gloves.  If it is cold enough and windy enough, we could get hurt simply walking to and from places due to exposure.  Never assume that a short walk will not hurt you because if the temperature is cold enough it will.  So always check the weather forecasts, and especially the wind chill, and dress to protect yourself.

There are many other natural disasters not covered in this brief article.  Droughts can cause agricultural disasters and oceans can create a range of issues for coastal cities.  It does not matter what natural disaster we might face, what matters is that we combat the challenges cause by them with rational thought and sound judgement.  Have a plan and make good decisions.  Doing so will only help keep you and your loved ones safe.
